DON'T BE SO BLUE. BE SAPPHIRE INSTEAD!
What is Bombay?
Bombay Sapphire is a brand of gin that's distilled by the Bombay Spirits Company (of course), which is a part of the company Barcardi. What sets Bombay apart is their distillation process where their spirits are gently infused as it steams through the botanicals to create a more delicate flavour profile.
Where did it beGIN?
The brand Bombay was first launched in 1986 by the English wine-merchant IDV. The name originates from the popularity of gin in India during the British Raj. The Sapphire in the name refers to the violet-blue Star of Bombay which was minder from Sri Lanka.
Tasting Notes
Bombay Sapphire's flavouring is made of 10 ingredients:
- almond
- lemon peel
- liquorice
- juniper berries
- orris root
- angelica
- coriander
- cassia
- cubeb
- grains of paradise
Bombay Sapphire is known to have a strong citrus aroma on the nose with acidic lemon dominating with a good chunk of juniper and alcoholic notes. The background flavour of Bombay is sweet with a distinct floral fruity character.
On the palate, Bombay is a bit oily and thick. The taste starts very mild with not a lot of flavour happening, but once you get your tongue covered you will be hit with some heat, slightly spicy lemon and a touch of earthly floral notes. You will get a few bits of juniper in there with a tight long finish with heat, coriander, juniper and a balanced citrus note.
