Product Details

Since its inception, Penfolds Koonunga Hill has always aimed to deliver quality, value and consistency. The original 1976 Koonunga Hill Claret is a legendary wine that is still drinking well today. A favourite at Penfolds Re-corking Clinics, collectors value its quality and longevity. Koonunga Hill Shiraz joined the range in 2002, a contemporary reflection of Penfolds multi-regional sourcing philosophy. Shiraz from the warmer districts of South Australia is carefully blended, with the Barossa Valley always well represented.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Garnet, crimson red Nose: A fruity and appealing nose with giveaway Penfolds markers - wafts of white chocolate above a base of meaty pan scrapings. Appealing Christmas cake spices (cinnamon & nutmeg) laced with juniper and dark red cherry fruits. No overt oak to speak of... Palate: A medium-bodied release with the spicy and vibrant notes expected of this variety and wine. An even, balanced structure, with a cranberry bite/attaque affording a crisp and defined finish. Concealed oak and tannins lurk in the background. Subtle. Imminently approachable.

Penfolds has had its success driven by generations of visionaries and innovators. From its start in 1844 to today, science, art and innovation came together to drive Penfolds to become one of Australia's most famed and respected winemakers.

With the success of early sherries and fortified wines, Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold planted the vine cuttings they carried on their way over here to Australia.

Dr Penfold's medical reputation grew alongside the company, with Mary running the winery. With early Clarets and Rieslings gaining popularity, and Christopher passing, Mary assumed complete responsibility for the winery, which helped Penfolds see years of determination and endeavour.

The rest is history.

Today, despite its great success, Penfolds doesn't rest. Celebrating their 170th anniversary, Penfolds continues to hold dear the philosophies and legends.

1844 to Evermore!
